Case Study - Huge Retail Chain in India

The Client

The client is in the Retail business and is part of India's largest conglomerate and has a super market chain across India with hundreds of stores. They are on a major expansion spree and would have over 5000 stores country-wide in the next couple of years.

Business Need

  • The client is introducing a India network of retail outlets across India in multiple formats.
  • In a move to strengthen its retail venture, the client is planning inorganic growth through acquisitions.
  • The client was looking to provide dual factor authentication to identify the associates who operate the Point of Sale (PoS) terminals at the checkout counters.
  • The client was looking for a solution that unambiguously identifies the person using the PoS system, to avoid misuse by unauthorized users.
  • The goal was to ensure that there is no pilferage, thereby ensuring that there is no dent to the organization's bottom-line due to misuse at the check out.

Challenges

  • With a rapid expansion across India, deduction of identity misuse was becoming a major challenge as the details of the contract employees were retained at the store level, locally.
  • Identity of the contract employee moving from store to store was not traceable.
  • The erosion in profit margins due to pilferage was not traceable due to identity misuse.
  • Techconet's solution was required to be integrated with the existing POS application.

The Precision Techconet® Solution

Precision Techconet leveraged its expertise in Biometric technology and implemented a fool-proof solution that had:

  • The solution was introduced at two levels, at the time of registration and at the time of system logon.
  • Dual Authentication (biometric and username & password) at logon for the users to ensure identity.
  • A list of blacklisted employees so that they cannot work in any of the chain's stores across the country. This is ensured as an individual's biometric information is stored against his/her details at a central level and verified during the time of registration.

Technology behind the solution

  • Fingerprint recognition technology is considered to be the best choice for most applications from network security systems to compact devices, due to its accuracy, speed, reliability, non-intrusive interfaces, and cost-effectiveness.
  • The duplication of biometric fingerprint technology is virtually impossible (one in one billionth of a chance of duplication).
  • The algorithm used to extract the finger print features and compare was one of the best in the industry with capabilities of comparing 40000 finger prints in a second.
  • Seamless integration with the existing application was achieved without altering any functionality using Microsoft .NET framework.
  • Communication between the client and server were established over using TCP/IP using sockets.
  • Online Reporting and dashboards were provided using Crystal Reports.

Benefits

The Precision Techconet solution offered the following business benefits:

  • The Fingerprint recognition technology and biometric logon solution offered to the client resulted in improving the margins for the supermarket chain by reducing pilferage.
  • The arrest of identity misuse increased the confidence level of the retail chain's customers as their in-store experience improved and increased customer loyalty.
